Great Crested and Smooth Newt picture (60K)

Key features:

These are both adult females pictured during the breeding season (24 April). The Great Crested Newt (bottom of picture) is much bigger and is much darker in colour. The Common Newt (top) has a much smoother skin. Hence the alternative names of "Smooth" and "Warty" newt.

Note that the female Smooth Newt doesn't have the orange stripe along the underside of the tail.
